Since 2023, I have been exploring visceral manipulation through the Barral Institute and it has changed my practice. The idea of visceral manipulation is that the body is compensating in the musculoskeletal structures for tension and/or pressure in the viscera--the organs. My previous training was in treating muscles, joints, and nerves primarily. What I have come to appreciate is that treating through the visceral manipulation mindset, I am able to appreciate relationships between structures be it organ, nerve, blood vessel, etc and often addressing this precisely, resolves muscle and joint complaints. Sometimes it is immediate, sometimes it is over time. This approach also allows space for how emotions can influence our nervous systems and elicit patterns of compensation. It is truly fascinating work.
Here's some definitions from the Barral Institute. I am looking forward to taking the brain courses in the future!
